How to play

Putting spin on the cue ball

With spin you decide where the cue ball goes after your shot. That way you set it up for your next shot, make tricky angles and play around other balls.

Topspin (follow)

How: hit the cue ball slightly above centre with a smooth stroke. The ball gets forward rotation and keeps rolling after hitting the object ball.

When: to let the cue ball roll further, for example over a long distance or to the spot for your next shot.

Backspin (draw)

How: hit the cue ball slightly below centre with a smooth stroke. The ball gets backward rotation and rolls back after hitting the object ball.

When: to pull the cue ball back, handy for avoiding obstacles or getting a better position for your next shot.

Sidespin (English)

How: hit the cue ball left or right of centre with a smooth stroke. The ball gets sideways rotation and takes a different direction after hitting the object ball.

When: to play the cue ball around obstacles or make an angle that would otherwise be hard to reach.

Stun shot

How: hit the cue ball dead centre with a firm, straight stroke. The cue ball hits the object ball without further rotation and stops.

When: to stop the cue ball where it hit the object ball, for precise positioning.

Combinations

How: combine topspin, backspin and sidespin by hitting the cue ball off-centre at an angle. The ball gets a complex rotation and moves across the table in unusual ways.

When: for advanced positioning and to get out of tricky situations.
